Charter Members

There were sixty eight (68) known charter members of the lodge and although there may have been several others, we find nothing to indicate that the record of any has been lost.

The basic information regarding each charter member contained on the following pages has been obtained from the files of Arlington Heights Lodge, the lodge from which the brother dimitted to become a charter member, and the Grand Lodge of Texas.

The above files are often lacking in information and notations on the files were changed when a brother moved his residence, changed his place of employment, or moved his office. Therefore the profession (Prof) and residence (Res) shown are those listed in the City Directory for the city of Fort Worth for the year 1922.

Street Name Changes: Residences often show numbered streets and avenues which have been changed. Changes are as follows:

1st Avenue is now Washburn
2nd Avenue is now Harley
3rd Avenue is now Lafayette
4th Avenue is now Dexter
5th Avenue is now Bryce
6th Avenue is now Byers
7th Avenue is now Collinwood
8th Avenue is now El Campo
9th Avenue is now Pershing
10th Avenue is now Birchman
11th Avenue is now Calmont
5th Street is now Hulen
6th Street is now Kenley
7th Street is now Sanguine
8th Street is now Eldridge
9th Street is now Penticost
10th Street is now Neville
11th Street is now Merrick

We have been unable to locate any information regarding the numbering system in 1922; however, we do know that Brother Sparrow’s residence at 3201 5th Avenue is now know as 5101 Bryce, also Brother Stonestreet’s residence is now known as 5100 Crestline Rd. and it is between Neville and Merrick, which would fit the location ‘north of 5th Avenue between 10th and 11th streets as shown in the 1922 city directory.

According to Reverend DeWolfe, retired rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, Brother Ralph Neville told DeWolfe that he was given the task of renaming the streets and avenues, and had named the old 10th street after himself.

We should here thank Fort Worth Lodge #148 for the 23 of their members who dimitted to become Charter Members of our lodge. Also Julian Field Lodge #908 which gave us 20, Southside Lodge #1114 for 5, and Tarrant Lodge #942 for 3. The remaining Charter Members came from lodges about the state of Texas and from Michigan, North Carolina, Kansas, Arkansas 2, Missouri, and Illinois.

It is interesting to note that only six of the Charter members later became Worshipful Master. Questioning of old time members reveals this was due to two causes. Some who worked very hard to get our lodge established did not have the time to take from their business and/or preferred to remain in the background lending their wisdom through others. Secondly the lodge was very strict in requiring that the principal or senior officers be proficient in their ritualistic work.

Should anyone know of more information regarding any of our Charter Members or early Worshipful Masters they should contact us so that their information can be included in these pages.

The records of this lodge do not list Brother Basham as a Charter Member, however, there is attached to the minutes of a meeting held on 15 December, 1921 a list of names of 41 brethren who signed the original petition for a charter for this lodge (two of whom withdrew their names), followed by a list of 32 additional brethren who joined in the organization of the lodge and were to be considered Charter Members. The list of 32 includes one ‘Chas’ Basham, since we find no other person with the name of ‘Basham’ in our files, the ‘Chas’ appears to be an error. Also on petition for affiliation dated 1 March, 1922 the word ‘Charter’ is written in pencil. From his obituary we find that he was for many years the head greens keeper and chief of security at Rivercrest Country Club. He founded the Westover Hills Police and Fire Departments and was the first Chief of Police there and served until August, 1961 just before his death. He resided for many years at 5336 El Campo St.

Sparrow, Francis Hicklin

Photo

Sparrow, Francis Hicklin, “Frank” was born on 20 May, 1853 in Stone, Staffordshire, England, and died 5 May, 1933 just short of his 80th birthday. He came to us from Fort Worth Lodge #148, with which lodge he had affiliated on 2/5/1900, having come to them from Honour Lodge #526 at Wolverhampton, England. He served with the lodge as Charter Treasurer and on thru the Masonic year 1929-30. He also served as Trustee for the term 1926-1929. He was the owner of Reliable Steam Laundries and the Really Able Cleaners and Dryers, and resided at 3201 5th Avenue, Arlington Heights (now 5101 Bryce). He was awarded a Life Membership in this lodge on 25 March, 1924.
Deed records of Tarrant County and Lodge minutes reflect he donated to this lodge his 50% interest in the land where this lodge is situated. See Stonestreet, William C.

In 1986 we began trying to find more information on Brother Sparrow's Masonic history. A brother visiting London checked at the Grand Lodge of England and found that a Francis Hicklin Sparrow Esq. had been made a Mason in 1847 but this could not have been our Frank Sparrow; however, it could have been his father since the names were identical.

We received from The Lodge of Honour #526 Wolverhampton, the following message in response to inquiries. Thank you for you letter requesting Masonic details of Brother J. H. Sparrow, which made very interesting reading. Our records name him as Francis Hicklin Sparrow (or usually, F.H. Sparrow) in every instance.

He seems to have been a very enterprising character and the type that once made this country and empire "great". I am sorry but I can only help you with his Masonic details as appended. If you are keen to pursue his ancestry, it could well take a long time and prove expensive. You could write to the "Express & Star", Wolverhampton, for insertion in its "Letters to the Editor" column, giving such details as you have and requesting relatives or interested parties to supply any available information on the subject to you. It is a not unusual feature of the paper.

Yours Fraternally,

T. H. Ward

Secretary

The Lodge of Honour No. 526
Masonic details of Brother Francis Hicklin Sparrow

The following extracts are from the minutes of Lodges held at the Star and Garter Hotel, Wolverhampton.
13 February 1880.
"The W. M. then read a letter he had received from Bro. E. H. Thorne, J. W., in regard to the application to him of Mr. Francis Hicklin Sparrow, of Codsall., Merchant, Aged 26 years, as a Candidate for Freemasonry: and, in consequence of his being about to leave England for Syria in the month of April next, requesting that Mr. Sparrow's name might be put on the Lodge circular for the next regular meeting, the same having been done and all the members duly notified as prescribed by the Constitution to meet such cases, He, Bro. E. H. Thorne, J.W. proposed, by the letter referred to and Bro. F. Walton, S.W. seconded the application of Mr. Francis Hicklin Sparrow and, the ballot having been taken, which proved unanimous and the Candidate, having signed the usual declaration was admitted in due form. The ceremony of initiation was performed by the W.M., the Candidate thus becoming an Entered Apprentice. Bro. E.H. Thorne J.W. delivered the charge in the 1st degree to the newly initiated brother."

12th March 1880.
"Bro. F. H. Sparrow, having answered the usual questions, was entrusted and retired. The lodge was opened in the 2nd degree and the Candidate, having been readmitted, was passed to the 2nd degree and became a Fellowcraft Mason. "

9th April 1880.
"The lodge was opened in the 2nd degree. Bro. F. H. Sparrow, having answered the usual questions was entrusted and retired. The Lodge was opened in the 3rd degree and the Candidate, having been readmitted, was duly raised by the W.M., assisted by Bro. Barnett I.P.M., to the Sublime Dedgree of a Master Mason."

Additional Notes from Brother Ward in Wolverhampton

1)

Codsall is now, in effect, a suburb of Wolverhampton (5 Miles) but, in 1880, it must have been just a hamlet. I live off the Codsall Road 2 1/2 miles) and there are still open fields in between. It must have been mainly a farming community plus "gentlemen's residences".

2)

In the Summons, he is descibed as a Merchant. His initiation wasa rather unusual in that the Lodge did not follow the usual procedure of (a) Notice of intention. (b) Proposal next month, (c) Balloting the following month. In over 40 years of Masonry I have never come across a previous example. However, my Ancient Brethren appear to have been in order (I would not expect otherwise) and in full accord with the provisions of Rule 160, Book of Constitutions. In his letter refferred to, he states "he has to leave England for Syria in April next and will not return for a considerable time and wished to take his 3rd degree before leaving.

3)

Our minutes after 1883 are lost but up till then in the Annual Returns he is shown as "Fully paid up and in good standing". His address was given as Beyrout, Syria and he is variously described as a Merchant, Broker, Metal Broker, etc... He does not appear on our list of Past Masters and, so far as I can ascertain, he never returned to his mother lodge.

T.H. Ward Secretary
